NEW YORK’S TRANSITION TO EVs

SITUATION

New York must cut its dependence on fossil fuels and move to a clean energy economy to avoid the oncoming climate crisis and to fulfill the mandates of 2019’s landmark legislation the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act).

The electric vehicle (EV) industry is facing limitations that are hindering New York from reaching the Climate Act goals and unlocking both the resulting good paying jobs and potential tax revenue. EV manufacturers are currently restricted in terms of sales locations in New York, preventing most of the state from having easy access to these innovative EVs as an option when buying a car.

ACHIEVING NEW YORK’S CLIMATE GOALS

New York set its electric vehicle adoption goal to 2 million zero-emissions vehicles registered by 2030.

This goal cannot be achieved with the existing rules in place. Despite the growth of the EV market over the past two years and New York’s ambitious climate policies and goals, it has only brought New York 3% toward this goal. Passing legislation to remove the sales location cap will ensure that all New Yorkers have access to this technology and New York can achieve its clean energy goals.

STATE-WIDE SUPPORT

115 environmental groups from Buffalo to New York City agree—we must open the market to EV manufacturers to address climate change and meet our environmental goals.

New York will not be able to build its clean-energy economy or achieve its goals unless it changes the way it operates and overhauls the outdated rules that protect the fossil fuel industry.
